As winter fast approaches my family has started breaking out with cold sores, also known as Herpes Simplex-1 (HSV-1). Although there is no cure for this contagious virus that invades the system, there are ways a person can cut down the healing time substantially.
At Vitality, we carry a line of products by Quantum Health® called Super Lysine+. Whichever format you are comfortable with Super Lysine has it, from lip balm style to capsules.
Unfortunately, these products are not vegan due to the beeswax and bee propolis, but we do offer an alternative solution if you are willing to do a little work. Zinc tablets offer an immune boost that can help when you have a cold sore flare (Vitality offers many different brands) and pair that with a mixture of NOW® Jojoba Oil and NOW® Tea Tree oil (recipe and directions below) applied to the cold sore twice per day. A copper deficiency can result from taking zinc, so taking it for a prolonged period of time isn’t advisable unless prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional.
Tea Tree topical treatment ingredients and directions:
- 1 mL NOW ® Tea Tree essential oil
- 30 mL NOW ® Jojoba oil (the reason we use jojoba is it provides a barrier as it replicates the sebum that naturally occurs on your skin).
- An amber glass bottle (available at Vitality)
Pour 20-25 drops of tea tree oil into the bottle. Top up with jojoba oil. Close and shake. Apply to cold sore twice per day. Store in a cool dark place. Do not store in the fridge as it will become a semi-solid. The product has a long shelf life due to the jojoba oil which has an indefinite shelf life. Jojoba oil, although referred to as oil, is actually a liquid wax, not an oil.
These products work best when you feel that initial tingle before the cold sore visibly appears. In my experience, using either method the cold sore lasts approximately 3 days. You can also couple the Super Lysine capsules with the tea tree topical treatment as well.
